February 14, 2011: Coffee Doesn't Have to Make Me Fat! [Ever Again]
Materials List
Maxwell House Dark Roast coffee
Don Francisco’s Butterscotch Toffee flavored coffee
Land O Lakes fat-free half & half
International Delight English Almond Toffee flavored creamer
coffee maker
coffee mug
measuring cup (2 ½ cups)
measuring spoons (1 tablespoon/1 teaspoon)
cold, filtered water
teaspoon for stirring/tasting
Procedure
- Brew a pot of regular coffee using cold, filtered water. Pour a mugful to the usual desired level.
- Measure the amount of coffee in the mug by pouring it into the measuring cup. Record the volume. (12 oz.)
- Pour the coffee back into the mug and rinse the measuring cup.
- Pour 1 cup of flavored creamer into the measuring cup.
- Slowly pour the flavored creamer from the measuring cup into the coffee mug, stirring occasionally, until it is the desired color.
- Taste the teaspoon. Add more flavored creamer if needed. When the flavor is perfect, subtract the amount of flavored creamer remaining in the measuring cup from 1 cup. Record the difference. (8 oz. - 5 oz. = 3 oz.)
- Double the amount of the coffee. This is the amount of coffee I drink in a typical day. Double the amount of creamer. This is the amount of creamer I drink in a typical day. (24 oz. coffee + 6 oz. creamer)
- Pour ¼ cup of half & half into the measuring cup. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar and stir. Taste the stirring spoon. Add more sugar by the teaspoon and/or more half & half by the tablespoon until the sweetness-to-creaminess are balanced. Record the total amount of sugar and the total amount of half & half. (6 tsp. sugar-to-¼ cup half & half) Use this ratio to calculate the amount to double in Step 10.
- Brew a pot of flavored coffee using cold, filtered water. Measure the same amount of coffee as recorded in Step 2, and pour it into the mug. (12 oz.)
- Repeat Steps 6-7, using the sugar/half & half mixture. (6 tsp. sugar-to-¼ cup half & half). Double the amounts of ingredients. This is the amount of flavored coffee, sugar, and half & half I will be drinking for reduced calories and fat. (24 oz. coffee + ½ cup half & half + 12 tsp. = 4 tbsp. sugar)
